WEFTA volunteers Ramón Lucero and Royce Beaudry headed down to Chiapas, Mexico in April (2017) to assist with ongoing water projects in the remote communities of Miguel Hidalgo and Tierra y Libertad. Ramón Lucero is a long-time WEFTA volunteer. Royce is new to WEFTA and had the opportunity to learn more about the water resource challenges these communities face, and looking for effective ways to address those challenges with the local material and equipment limitations.
Ramón and Royce checked the operation of a community water system installed in Miguel Hidalgo in 2011 and helped the community replace a section of water transmission line. They also examined the water storage tank to determine the best method of reducing seepage through the tank walls. Additionally, in nearby Tierra y Libertad, they developed a detailed list of needed materials and a cost estimate to construct a water system project for 65 homes.
