Project & Program Background

This initiative will secure a sustainable water source for Valle Sarón, improving health, education, and daily living conditions for the entire community.

Community Background

Valle Sarón is located in a valley by the Auyama River in the Panama province of Bocas del Toro, between Almirante and Chiriqui Grande. The community is right on the main road that connects Bocas del Toro to the Interamerican Highway. The climate is tropical with a dry season in the months between December to March and more rain from April through November. The community economy is largely reliant on agriculture. Community members grow plantains, cacao, and other products for sale and personal consumption. The community’s most prominent issues are access to water, sanitation, health facilities, and employment. The community has very limited access to water during dry periods. During these periods the school and vast majority of houses do not have running water. The school often sends students home when there is no water on hot days. Some of the most common health issues include diabetes, intestinal parasites, sexually transmitted infections, and cataracts.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Concerns

Valle Sarón experiences severe water shortages, particularly during dry periods, affecting homes and schools. The lack of reliable water access frequently disrupts education, as the local school—serving nearly 700 students—must close on days without water. Addressing these issues will significantly improve sanitation, hygiene, and overall quality of life in the community.

Proposed Projects

The community of Valle Sarón is seeking support to improve and repair its existing aqueduct to ensure reliable water access. A recently constructed water intake meant to serve the local school and community has failed due to poor construction, leaving students and residents without sufficient water.

This project aims to:

  • Reconstruct the failed water intake with a solid foundation to prevent leaks.
  • Install a large reserve tank to improve water availability.
  • Replace old, broken PVC pipes to enhance water distribution.

Sustainability & Community Engagement

The local water committee and development board will oversee maintenance, ensuring long-term sustainability. The community has committed to providing labor for construction, reinforcing local ownership and accountability.

WEFTA Volunteers

WEFTA’s support is requested for technical evaluation, project design, and materials procurement. Construction and ongoing maintenance will be managed by the community, with facilitation from a local Peace Corps volunteer.

Poverty levels are
above 70% in the indigenous areas of Panama, known as comarcas.
High rates of poverty translates to low levels of access to basic resources.such as adequate clean water and sanitation.

Our commitment is to the long-term success
of the projects we’re involved with and it doesn’t stop when construction is complete.
